Michael Allen Smith, 69, of Edwardsville, Kansas passed away at Providence Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas at 7:20 pm on June 20, 2023.
He was born on January 24, 1954, in La Plata, Maryland, the first child of Warren Webster Smith and Mary Louise Simms Smith.
Mike attended Truman High School in Independence, Missouri and graduated from Gauley Bridge High School in Gauley, West Virginia. He had many fond memories of his friends and relatives there, often describing the time as “having a ball.”
As a young man, Mike was keen on military warfare and strategy. While Mike was in the United States Marine Corps, he was injured. Although his injury may have cut his military aspirations short, he obtained a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. He went on to work for the Federal Government as a Federal Probation and Parole Officer and the State of Missouri as a State Probation and Parole Officer. Eventually, Mike retired from both the U.S. District Court of Kansas and the State of Missouri.
Mike made Edwardsville, Kansas his home and enjoyed his neighbors. He loved history and studying genealogy. He especially enjoyed researching his Scottish ancestry. He took pride in creating memories and experiences with his family at many of the Kansas City area festivals and events.
Mike’s survivors include his daughter, Kori Finlay, and her husband, David, of Blue Springs, MO; daughter, Kati Smith, of Tiffany Springs, MO; brother, Stephen Smith, of Independence, MO; sister, Karen Johnson, and her husband, Steve, of McKinney, TX; sister, Connie Wendleton, and her husband, Chris, of Blue Springs, MO; and his beloved grandchildren, Violet, Vincent, and Victor Finlay. He was preceded in death by his wife, Debra Ann Perry Smith, and his parents, Warren Webster Smith and Mary Louise Simms Smith.
A graveside inurnment private ceremony and Celebration of Life for family will be held on Saturday, July 29, 2023 in Winchester, Kansas at Wise Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider taking your family to an event in his honor.
