William Powell, 85, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2023, in Overland Park, KS surrounded by family.
William Powell was born in Wichita, KS, to Durland and Harriet Powell. He was the oldest of 3 children. William graduated from Wichita East High School. While growing up in Wichita he worked at his uncle's body shop which helped foster his love of cars. He attended Kansas State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of the Delta Upsilon Fraternity at Kansas State University. William continued his education earning a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Missouri. He worked at Boeing in Wichita, KS and then at the Bendix Corporation (later known as Allied Signal and Honeywell) in Kansas City, MO.
William was a member of Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church and later Colonial Presbyterian Church. William was best known for his love of sailing and boating at area lakes including Lake of the Ozarks, light houses, Cosmosphere, space, and loved to work in his yard. He loved to fix anything that was broken. If an item wasn't broken he was always trying to make it work even better. He loved spending time with family and particularly his three grandchildren.
William is survived by his two children Christopher (Lisa) Powell and Catherine (David) Pickert, sister Anita Nicholson, sister-in-law Mary Powell, two granddaughters Haley Pickert and Lexi Pickert, grandson Grant Powell, his former wife Debra Powell, and many members of his extended family and friends. William is preceded in death by his parents Durland and Harriet Powell, brother Gary Powell, brother-in-law Robert Nicholson. He will be missed every day.
The visitation will be held on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at 10:30 am followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am at Colonial Presbyterian Church 12501 W. 137th St. Overland Park, KS 66221.
